Suva, the capital of Fiji, is a bustling and vibrant city filled with interesting sights and activities. Whether you’re a fan of outdoor adventure, cultural exploration, or simply a romantic getaway, you are bound to find something to suit your taste in the city. Here is our list of the ten most exciting things to do in Suva.
A must-visit in Suva is the Suva Municipal Market. The market is divided into two sections – a local produce section and a handicrafts market – both of which are great places to explore. Local produce on offer includes fresh aquatic food such as fish and other seafood, as well as fruit and vegetables such as pineapples, coconuts, and bananas. The handicrafts market sells beautiful works of art and traditional souvenirs such as wooden sculptures, beadwork, shell jewellery, and hand-woven baskets.
The Suva Municipal Market is a great place to experience the local culture and get a taste of the local cuisine. There are also a variety of food stalls offering delicious local dishes such as kokoda (raw fish salad) and palusami (coconut cream and taro leaves). The market is open every day from early morning until late afternoon, so there is plenty of time to explore and find something special.
The Fiji Museum houses artefacts from all over Fiji and showcases the history and culture of the country. Visitors can take self-guided and guided tours to explore the museum’s exhibits. Highlights include archaeological finds from sites throughout the country and traditional cultural objects such as mat weaving and fire walking sticks. The museum also has a library and provides educational programs for adults and children.
Thurston Gardens is a beautiful park located on the edge of Suva. It is a great place for a picnic or a leisurely stroll. Visitors can admire the manicured gardens, explore the park’s many trails, or enjoy a boat ride across the lake. The park is home to some rare bird species so it’s a great place for bird watching. The garden also offers night walks which are perfect to take in some fresh air and spot nocturnal animals.
Colo-i-Suva Forest Park is located on the outskirts of Suva and offers beautiful nature trails amidst its lush vegetation. Besides its natural beauty, the park is also home to some interesting cultural sites such as an old fort and a World War II gun emplacement. The trails are marked by colorful signs that provide visitors with information about the flora and fauna in the area. It’s a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
The Government Buildings are some of Suva’s most beautiful heritage sites. The buildings are inscribed with intricate carvings, sculptures and other artwork from Fiji’s colonial period. Visitors can admire the exterior as well as explore the interiors which are open to the public during working hours. There is also a café located inside the complex where you can grab a bite to eat or a relaxing drink.
Albert Park is a large open space that overlooks Suva harbour. Here visitors can enjoy stunning views of the city skyline along with distant mountain ranges. It is popular with locals as well as tourists who come to enjoy both day and night walks through the park’s trails. There is also an amphitheatre inside Albert Park where live acts often perform.
Suva is home to some fine dining establishments that offer traditional Fijian cuisine as well as international dishes. There’s something for all tastes, whether you want local specialties such as kokoda or tavolo or more internationally inspired dishes such as seafood and curries.Â
The Fiji Cultural Village provides visitors with an insight into Fijian culture. Here visitors can experience traditional ceremonies such as fire walking displays, kava ceremonies, special tribal dances and craft demonstrations all of which showcase the rich cultural heritage of Fiji. It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in the local culture and gain an appreciation for all that Fiji has to offer. Remember, if you visit any kind of cultural village on your travels, check that the village is run by local people and that some profits are returned to the community or another ethical channel.
