Program overview

Learn how to identify different species of whales and dolphins and record their unique behaviour in pods. During this marine conservation fellowship you’ll work alongside conservation experts and learn a technique of photo identification which helps in identifying individuals, monitoring their populations, newborns and pod sizes and use of hydrophones which helps in understanding their social dynamics and behaviour. Going out on an inflatable motorboat, you’ll collect data on cetacean species. The data you collect can be used for your individual research project, your university dissertation/thesis or for ongoing long-term research initiatives.

As well as learning career-boosting skills like critical thinking, time management, teamwork, data analysis and data presentation, you will complete three online courses which are included in your program: Leading Teams for Impact, Careers in Sustainable Development and Marine Conservation.

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and is dominated by the active volcano Mount Teide. Our base is a 30 min walk from the coastline and Puerto Colon. In 2021 Tenerife’s west coast was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for cetacean (dolphin and whale) conservation, and made the first Whale Heritage Site in Europe.

Participants on this program will contribute to UN SDG13: Climate Action, Goal 14: Life Below Water and Goal 15: Life on Land.

Please note that this is not a diving program, although you can go for a recreational dive during your free time.
