What's included

Project work

Assist with underwater dive surveys and data collection to inform coral conservation decisions.

Accommodation

Comfortable shared housing in a bungalow-style building in the local village.

Meals

Participants prepare meals together with fresh local ingredients and staples, like tofu, vegetables, chicken and fish.

Airport transfer

You’ll get collected from the airport.

Comprehensive pre-departure support

Includes a dedicated support coordinator to answer your questions, an Essential Info Pack, and a webinar to learn more about your program.

Comprehensive in-country support

Includes a welcome orientation, including safety, culture and environmental info. A Program Manager is there to support you.

24/7 mental health support

Receive support services provided by licensed professionals.

Local transport

Transport to and from project work by boat.

Diving gear

Includes BCD, regulator, weight belt and fins, but bring your own gear if you prefer. A dive computer is optional and can be rented at an additional cost.

Diving

A minimum of 7 dives per week. The frequency of dives depends on weather and the nature of the work taking place during the season.
What's not included

Flights and airport taxes, medical and travel insurance, visa costs, police or background check, additional drinks and gratuities, extra local excursions, personal items and toiletries, dive mask, Perhentian marine park fee, local transport during free time, food and accommodation outside the research station, dive medical (only if doing a PADI course), diving insurance to cover your diving activities, and PADI certifications. Optional: Dive computer rental (RM10 per day).

Your accommodation

Live the island life at our cosy volunteer house, nestled in the heart of Perhentian Kecil’s only village. This charming spot offers three dorm-style bedrooms where you’ll share the space with fellow volunteers, fostering a sense of community and friendship. After a busy day of marine conservation work, unwind with home-cooked meals and stories of the day’s adventures. The house provides all the essentials, including bedding, mosquito nets, safe drinking water and fans to keep you comfortable.

 

For those seeking a bit more privacy and comfort, accommodation upgrades are available. This includes a private room featuring air conditioning and an en suite bathroom, perfect for individuals or couples looking for a bit of extra privacy and comfort.

 

Wi-Fi is available at the project team house. Should you wish to keep in touch more regularly around the islands, consider purchasing a local SIM card at the main airport upon arrival. Electrical outlets are Type G – 240V, ensuring your devices stay charged.

 

Laundry facilities include a washing machine at the project house and a paid laundry service in the village, making it easy to keep your clothes fresh throughout your stay.
